UNMC Student Representative: Leah Benson, Worms, NE
Leah Benson is a third year pharmacy student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She grew up in Worms, NE, and graduated from Wayne State College in 2010 with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Health Science.
Leah currently works at the Nebraska Medical Center Outpatient Pharmacy in Bellevue, NE. As an ambulatory care clinic, it provides Leah with the opportunity to interact with patients and to work with the pharmacists to manage some of the diabetic and anticoagulant patients. She is currently unsure what field she would like to pursue, but she is enjoying learning as much as she can about the different areas of pharmacy.
In addition to involvement with SIPA, Leah is also involved with a number of other organizations at school. She is the president of the Rural Pharmacy Student Association (RPSA) group this year, an organization geared toward students interested in rural pharmacy practice. She is also involved with the Midwest College of Clinical Pharmacy, Student Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, American Pharmacists Association, and Phi Lambda Sigma pharmacy leadership society. She also serves on UNMC’s Student Advisory Council.
Leah has been a student representative on the SIPA board since October 2010. She says that she really enjoys being a part of the SIPA organization because it provides so many opportunities for learning. Whether it’s listening to the other board members talk about happenings in their pharmacies or hearing the speakers at the CE events/SIPA programs on an array of topics, she says that she always leaves having learned something new.
